Guidelines

Topics

All the oral presentations and posters should refer to paleopathology either from a general point of view or with the presentation of case studies.

The presentations will be organized in:

- General sessions: methodology, new studies and analysis techniques, specific cases.

- Specific sessions:
1. Paleopathology in Egypt: skeletal and mummified remains.

Paleopathology research of ancient Egypt is increasingly becoming an interdisciplinary subject, going beyond simple description.

This session aims to deepen our knowledge about the pathologies present in skeletons and mummified remains of this region and open research to studies that are already usual in other cultural horizons. The chronological scope of this session goes beyond the pharaonic periods, looking forward to better understand health conditions in ancient Egyptian society as whole, a lesser-known aspect of their daily life.

This session will focus on case and population pathology studies, including proposals on diagnostic methodology and specific terminology.

2. Paleopathology related to motherhood and early childhood.
Archaeoanthropological records provide information on the presence of skeletons belonging to pregnant and puerperal women, as they are associated with fetal and perinatal remains. Obtaining information on the episodes that caused their death is usually complicated. A good on-site record has made it possible to document complications that conditioned intrapartum maternal-fetal death on several occasions. In other cases, the fetal age and the mother’s health state will be the elements available to suggest possible causes of death. The infant remains corresponding to early childhood (0-6 years) allow us to know the mortality rates, but it is often difficult to clearly determine the causes of death. However, it has been possible to identify injuries related to congenital malformations and injuries that affect the skeleton, from which we can suggest the potential causes of death.

3. Animals, palaeopathology and zoonoses: who makes whom sick?
The session aims to provide new elements of discussion for the study of the impact of human societies on animal health in the past and vice versa. There will be a special focus on the effects of domestication and the diverse animal management strategies implemented from prehistoric to modern times, especially the changes in mobility and physical stress linked to the development of different livestock exploitation strategies. The changing nature of the interactions between societies and animals (sedentism, penning, etc.) also led to the spread and transmission of new diseases or zoonoses to human populations (mice, fleas, black plague, etc.), still active to this day and protagonists of several historical undesirable feats. The session includes both the presentation of recent results and the latest methodological and analytical advances, integrating histological, morphometric, biomechanical and palaeomolecular analyses and the use of new digital resources in the registration and analysis of data.

Oral presentations

The oral communications will have a maximum duration of 10 minutes and only electronic supports in PowerPoint will be accepted.
